What is the first thing a man sees who is looking for love online? He sees head shots and online dating headlines. Both of these tools are the way to get him to read your profile, which is why they are essential to a good e-dating experience.
What Sort of Online Dating Headlines Work?
The first thing to understand is that the point is to get a man to click over to your profile. You don’t need to describe who you; which generally can’t be done in a few words and still remain interesting. What does work?
Tip #1. Be Funny – If you have a sense of humor, this is the time to use it. You may say you aren’t funny. No problem – borrow wit from someone else. Look for funny quotes to start things off. Everyone likes to laugh or even snicker, so find something you like and go for it.
Tip #2. Ask a Question – When you pose a question, you have a chance to engage the men. Of course, asking a funny question gets you bonus points. Think about what men want to talk about, or what you like that men like. For example, sports. If you are from the New York area, ask if they are a Mets or Yankees fan, or if he likes the Rolling Stones or Beatles? Music is also a good topic. Even something about food like Crunchy vs. Smooth Peanut Butter? Be curious to come up with a couple of good questions to try.
Tip #3. Borrow from Movies or TV – You don’t need to be creative when there are so many other people in the world who are. Just borrow a line or title from a favorite movie or TV show. Here are a few examples. Everyone Loves Raymond could be “Everyone Loves Jelly Donuts”, or Build on a title like “Modern Family Addict”, or Just Three Shades of Grey”, or, “This is NOT Mission Impossible”.
Tip #4. Use Quotes – People love quotes and there are tons of sites that list quotes of all kinds. Think about plays, classic books, movies, writers, politicians, and even proverbs. There are endless options in this arena, so no excuses that you can’t find something that works for you. It could be something light like “Eat Dessert First” or literary like “I Took the Road Less Traveled”.
Tip #5. Be Unusual – Try something wacky that takes people by surprise. That will help you stand out for sure and make men curious. “I don’t like diamonds,” or “I’m a silver digger with a heart of gold,” or even, “I remember the Alamo – just kidding”. Take something from history or current events. Give yourself to be unusual and brainstorm with a friend for wild, out there types of headlines.
In addition to the five ways to create a captivating headline, you need a few parameters to make sure your opener has maximum impact.
Tip #6. Keep it Short – On the web, people read very quickly or skim. That’s the biggest reasons why your headline is better off shorter than longer. Plus, some sites will only show part of it so the humor or message could be lost. Keep it to less than seven words and even fewer if the words themselves aren’t short.
Tip #7. Be Positive – Avoid anything sad, depressing or negative. That won’t make a good impression even if what you say is true. Upbeat positive people get loads more attention, so be sure to follow this online dating profile tip.
Tip #8. Change it Up – In the process of coming up with one great headline, you probably came up with several good ones. Don’t toss them out. I encourage my clients to change their headline weekly. It’s your own market research effort. Plus, changing something every week to resubmit your online dating profile keeps it fresh and at the top of the algorithm. That means you stay at the top of the search results to get more views.
