Midlife Dating: Today is the 1st Day of the Rest of Your Life

See Love, Speak Love, Be Love

I awoke to the church bells ringing as I do every Sunday morning. The neighborhood church plays a beautiful bell-song at 8am. so what’s the news here? We’re still here, still alive, still going.

According a particular Christian group, not sure who it is, they found a prediction in the New Testament that the final Judgment Day was yesterday, and the world would end at 6pm. I’m still here – aren’t you?

The main guy from this group spent over $140,000 on billboards around the country to make sure everyone was aware. He wanted to save our souls for Judgement day by spreading the word. Now that’s dedication to a cause. Yet, here we are.

Maybe I have been judged, or not. But, given all the media hype this situation received, I have to admit, this seems like an opportunity for renewal. A new lease on life. The dawn of a new day. A chance to change your destiny.

Given that today is the first day of the rest of your life, think about doing things differently. Why not start with love?

I’ve done a lot of spiritual study in my years, not religious mind you, but spiritual. One of my favorite writers is Eileen Caddy from the Findhorn Garden. In her book God Spoke to Me, she writes about the three commandments for the New Age. They are about Truth, Light and LOVE. To quote Eileen, the commandment for love says,

“See Love, Speak Love, Be Love”

Now that you have a new lease on life, whether its man-made or God-given, choose to live a loving life. According to the Law of Attraction, “like attracts like.” That means, when you start to live a loving life, you will more naturally attract love into your life. Its a rather simple tenant.

I must admit that I am working on this myself. While I have a romantic partner, I could still be more loving. God said, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself,” but do I do this? Not that I’m going to get all scriptural, but wouldn’t the entire world be a better place if we shared love?

Why not start today? Think about love as you move through your day. If you are shopping and standing in line, let someone go before you with just a few items. At a 4-way stop while driving, let the people who should go first, actually go first. If somebody cuts you off while driving, forgive rather than curse at them.

As you see people during your day, greet a few and say hello. Share your smile. Be warm and friendly rather than keeping to yourself.

One of my clients, a single guy of 42, balked at this idea. He felt women wouldn’t be open to him saying hello. We agreed to an experiment. He would start saying hello to women in the grocery store just to see what happens. Would he get rebuked and rejected for his efforts or would he get a warm welcome? Interesting question isn’t it?

At first he felt very uncomfortable and it seemed some women looked at him like he was strange. However, he did get a few encouraging smiles. And as he continued this practice and it became more natural, his friendly response rate increased to over 90%. As he opened to be friendly, others responded in kind.

I’m going to leave you with this idea for now. On this special day, when you have a a fresh start, make a brave decision. Open to love.  See love, Speak love and Be love. Enjoy it, then watch what happens next.
