Dating Over 40: Should You Ask a Man for Advice on Dating? Enter Donny Deutsch

There’s a new love guru  and he’s a MAN! Yes, Donny Deutsch, Madison Avenue Ad Guy and cancelled CNBC TV Show Host (The Big Idea), Donny is a savvy opportunist. Like many others, this smart business man watches trends and sees the writing on the wall.

Donny Deutsch - Love Calling

Matchmakers like Patti Stanger and Matt Titus have paved the way for popularizing TV shows on dating, along with many others. Donny, a proverbial womanizer, who has been married and divorced twice has jumped on the dating advice band wagon.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Would you take dating advice from a man who has been divorced twice and claims to LOVE women?

Three of the Real Housewives of Atlanta were on a TV talk show with Donny and two said they’d take his advice. But Ne Ne, who first said yes, later changed her mind.

One thing we know for sure, if he’s willing to tell the truth, he does KNOW what men like HIM are thinking! Donny points out that women tend to get their dating advice from other women and according to him, this is not a good resource . On this point, I must agree.

What? How can I agree with that? Well let me explain. Back when I was single and dating to find my husband, I got tons of advice from a myriad of girlfriends. I’d ask what I should do about situation or if they knew what something a guy said or did meant.

I learned the hard way MOST WOMEN HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA  WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.Oh yes this is very true. I received and followed a lot of VERY BAD ADVICE from well-meaning women friends who had opinions, but NO REAL KNOWLEDGE. I learned all this the hard way -ouch!

So, after all my personal experience, volumes of reading books and blogs, etc. I’ve come to the conclusion that SOME MEN, not all, do give very solid, straight-shooting and knowledgeable advice. As a womanizer (my description of him, not his) Donny knows all about the rackets men run on women. And he knows what will work with a man and the best course of action to take from this perspective.

Just to even the playing field, SOME WOMEN also know what they are talking about. As a professional dating coach since 2002, I’ve got 9 solid years of in-depth experience. I understand how men think because I’ve worked with male clients! Plus, everything else I’ve done to master this field so I can share what I know and save you some heartache.

I like a challenge and staying on my toes, so I watched a video that showed Deutsch answering 10 questions very quickly – just top-lining the answers to the main questions women have . I got 10 out of 10!

Here are a few of the “10 in 10” questions and answers from Donny’s Love Guru show:

1. A woman has a great first date, but the guy never called. Should she call him?
The Donny/Ronnie Answer: ABSOLUTELY NO! Don’t invade his space. He knows how to get in touch with you and will if he wants to. I would go on to say that if he doesn’t call, he’s not the right guy and the “why” doesn’t matter at all.

2. What’s one thing a woman should never do on a first date?
The Donny/Ronnie Answer: Don’t talk about your EX! Start fresh (rather than bringing your ex with you on your date by talking about him!  The new guy doesn’t want to know about your problems on a first date, never mind about your ex.

3.  My boyfriend always pays the bill. Should I feel guilty?
The Donny/Ronnie Answer: No! Men like to pay and if he doesn’t pay, you are with the wrong guy. I modify that a little by saying that you will likely start to at least offer and potentially pay at times after date 2 or 3. While Donny is wealthy, not all men are. But never offer on the first date! And I’d even hold off on the second because that’s the best way to figure out whether or not the guy is generous or has money issues.

If you want to know more about what men think, I’m finishing up a new book which will be available as an ebook by June. (or earlier if I’m lucky) What’s He Thinking: What You Need to Know about How Single, Midlife Men Think. I’ve talked to men, gathered lots of research and am getting ready to divulge every little secret. Stay tuned.

  1. It’s true I agree, a lot of the time women do not know and although your girlfriends can give you advice which is coming from a good place, the desired results do not come to fruition. I think it is great to have a trusted male friend who you can confide in and who says it as it is…
