Dating Over 40: Steve Harvey – Act like a Lady, Think like a Man

Just finished reading Steve Harvey’s book, Act like a Lady, Think like a Man. Overall, there is some really good info inside this book. Steve has a great sense of humor and his comedic side certainly shined through. But more than that Steve shared some eye-opening insights that are MUST READS for single women who are looking for long-term, committed loving relationships.

“Standards, Get Some”
First and foremost, Harvey points out that from a man’s perspective, women need to set standards for the men they date. He says, “Standards, Get Some” Good point Steve. harvey claims taht men don’t respect women and play the field because we let them. Because we make it too easy. Instead, he suggests that women create their own set of standards regarding how they want to be courted and stick to them! Amen.

How to Talk to Men
Steve maps out how to start a conversation about your relationship or other things that need to be addressed. He also explains WHAT NOT TO DO. Excellent advice and guidance!  Don’t ever start with those famous words that make a man shiver, “We have to talk.. Yikes, those four words have made more men run than that crazy running of the bulls in Spain.

90 Day Hold Out
This piece of advice is pretty tough if you ask me – hold off on intimacy for 90 days while you are getting to know a man.  I agree that it’s good to hold off for a while. Not because of what a man will think, but to guard your heart since it takes time to figure out if he’s just after sex or really interested. Waiting give you more time for reconnaissance.

I also don’t think you should worry that men will just go else where to get their needs met. Some women worry about this angle but I say, “Good – go somewhere else if that’s all you want!”

But in real life, 90 days is a very long time for anyone to wait. You  are the only one who can decide when the time is right for you. And as a woman, you have the power to say yes or no. follow your instincts. I know women who have married men they slept with on the first date, so it is possible, whether or not I recommend it.

Ask Him to be the Head of Your Household
Excuse me Steve? You have now stepped over the line. I’m not a ardent women’s libber, but I do believer in equality between the sexes. I invited a man to be my partner and we  can be co-heads, each with our won duties. But I don’t need anyone over me. I have a head thank you very much Steve so I don’t need yours.

Perhaps this is a figure of speed to appeal to his ego. men do like to be in charge. maybe he suggests a honorary title and isn’t suggesting that we put him in charge of everything. So I’ll cut him a little bit of slack.

Good for Women Over 40 or Under
Putting that aside – this book has very valuable information about men, how they think, and the best way to leverage the “system” to a woman’s advantage at any age, but esepcially over 40. I’ll give it an A-, especially if you can overlook the  few items that may get under your skin.

  1. Making a Great personal ad – Show who you actually are – Should you have an excellent sense of humour, do not just tell people that you are funny prove it within your ad. Be realistic. A lot of people do not look like film stars, most of whom don’t appear so very good in actual life either. So manage your expectations on what the person you are going to meet on the web is going to look like.
