For some singles, the holiday season can be difficult and emotional. With so much focus on family and couples, it’s no wonder. Yet, there are a number of things you can do to make the most of what the season. Here are 5 tips that can change your holiday experience for the better:
1. Make plans.
Call friends and family and schedule a get together. Whether you have cocktails, go for dinner or make cookies together, put something on your calendar that you will look forward to.
2. Attend a few singles oriented events.
Look through my event listing, the calendar section of the newspaper and local web sites that list singles events such as meetup.com to find fun single things to do for singles. Put them on your calendar too so you don’t sit around thinking there’s nothing to do.
This is a great time of year to volunteer and help those who are less fortunate. Serve a meal at a local soup kitchen, collect food for the CT Foodbank or ask at your house of worship if they need any help. Serving others is very rewarding and uplifting to see that you do make a difference.
4. Pamper yourself.
I don’t need to tell you how stressful this season is. Take good care of yourself by taking time to rejuvenate. Whether this means going to the spa, taking a bubble bath, exercising, or just getting enough sleep, do it! When you take care of yourself, you honor yourself which builds self esteem and allows you to regroup so you can keep up and help others.
5. Enjoy the little things.
There are so many special moments through out the season that can bring a smile to your face and warm your heart. Watch and notice them. enjoy the first snowflakes, drive by a wonderful display of lights, make cookies with your kids or borrow someone else’s. These are the things that can turn your mind set around so slow down a bit and notice the good things that surround you.
